Let the Magic Happen!

There's a special kind of magic that comes with old-school, drug-free progressive strength training - and I sincerely hope that everyone reading this Blog Post has a chance to experience that magic!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

Two quick notes and then we'll talk iron - and talk
about magic, as well - a very special kind of magic.

3. Let the Magic Happen!

In the Middle Ages, alchemists tried to
find a way to change iron to gold.

Some men spent their entire lives in a
fruitless search for the magic formula
that would change ordinary iron into
beautiful, shining gold -- gold that
would make them wealthier and more
powerful than the richest of kings.

They never succeeded.

Iron was iron, and gold was gold.

But hundreds of years later, other men
made a remarkable discovery.

They learned how to unleash the magic of
iron.

These were men like Alan Calvert, Mark
Berry, Harry Paschall, George F. Jowett,
Sig Klein, Bob Hoffman and Peary Rader.
The men who put barbells and dumbbells --
and the secret of how to use them --
into the hands of thousands of eager
trainees around the world.

And make no mistake about it. Barbells and
dumbbells are quite literally miracle tools.

Properly used, they can transform your
physique, adding many pounds of muscle,
and building enormous strength and power.

With the right kind of training, you can double
or even triple your starting levels of strength
and development. And some trainees do even
better than that.

To me, that's magic. Far more magic than
turning iron to gold.

But it doesn't stop there.

Barbell and dumbbell training works because it
is a form of progressive resistance training. You
start by handling weights that are manageable but
challenging -- and you gradually increase your
reps in each exercise -- and then you add weight
to the bar, drop back on the number of reps, and
build back up again.

And you repeat the process over and over.
It's a series of small steps -- but every step is a
step forward. With every step, you move forward
toward more strength, more muscle and more
power. Every step is a victory.

You end up transforming your body -- but more
than that, you end up transforming your mind,
your heart and your entire being.

You learn some of the most important lessons
a person can learn.

You learn that hard work leads to great results.
That success occurs step by step.

That whatever you can conceive and believe, you
can achieve.

That nothing can stop you.

And that you and you alone control your destiny
and your future.

Now, that's REAL magic.

If you train, you know what I'm talking about. If
you don't train, or if you stopped training, now's
the time to start (or start again) -- and to grab
some of that magic.

Do it now.

Let the magic happen!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

Trial and Error Training

Like all champions - and all successful trainees - John Grimek made plenty of mistakes when he was getting started - but he learned from them!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

One of the unique things about strength
training is that it's a physical activity that
most of us learn without a coach or
teacher.

If you think about it, that's very unusual.

When we're kids, and we start to play
sports, we learn the fundamentals from
coaches.

Football coaches.

Wrestling coaches.

Basketball coaches.

And so on.

If you want to learn how to box, you don't
try to learn it on your own - you go to a
boxing gym, and learn it there - from a
genuine, real world boxing trainer.

If you want to learn a martial art, you don't
learn it on you own - you go to a gym or a
dojo (or a school or academy) and you learn
it there - from a sensei or master or other
real world, legitimate expert.

But almost all of us learn strength training
more or less on our own.

Certainly that was true of my generation of
trainees (I'm 60, soon to be 61 - and I started
weight training 50 years ago).

We had magazines, which were more or less
useful in showing us how to do some of the
basic things - and in giving us more or less
useful workouts to try.

We had very short, very basic training courses
that came with our barbell sets.

We had friends or older brothers to watch -
or to teach us how to train.

But most of it was trial and error.

We pretty much taught ourselves how to train.
We tried different things. Some of them worked.

Most of them didn't.

If they worked, we kept on doing them.

If they didn't we tried something else.

And that entire process - learning on your own,
by trial and error, making mistakes and learning
from them - is not a negative.

It's actually one of the very best things about
strength training.

It teaches you important things that go far
beyond strength training:

Self-confidence.

Self-reliance.

Problem-solving.

Persistence.

Tenacity.

Perseverance.

Not giving up.

Independence.

Creativity.

Overcoming obstacles.

The things I learned as a young trainee have
helped me immeasurably in all other parts
of my life - and I'm sure they've done the
same for you.

So don't be afraid to try new things - or to
test new things - just to see if they work
for you.

It's called learning by trial and error - and it
works pretty darn well in the Iron Game.

Brooks Kubik

The Goal Directed Workout

Brooklyn's John Davis became the youngest man in history to win a World weightlifting championship - and he beat two former World and Olympic champions when he did it. He's a great example of goal-directed training and what it can do for you.

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

Training is important, but it's not enough
to just "train."

For real results, you need to train with a
purpose.

You need to have a goal.

You're not just training for the sake of
training. That's manual labor. You work
up a sweat, and you puff and pant, and
maybe you even feel sore the next day.

That's good, but it's just the beginning.

For real results, you need to do goal
directed training.

Find something that you desperately
want to do or to achieve. That's your
goal.

It might be hitting a particular weight
in the squat, deadlift or bench press --
in the standing press -- or in Olympic
lifting.

It might be hitting 300/400/500.

It might be building 17 inch upper arms.

It might be gaining 20 pounds of muscle.

It might be losing 50 pounds of flab.

It might be qualifying for and competing
in a particular contest or competition in
your chosen sport.

It might be setting a record -- winning a
state, regional or national championship --
or even a World championship.

It might relate to health. Getting your blood
pressure or your blood sugar where it needs
to be.

It might be beating a serious illness -- or
coming back after an injury.

The point is, it's YOUR goal -- and it means
something very important to YOU.

Your goal empowers you. It drives you
to train harder and harder. It's the most
demanding coach you could ever have.

Of course, your goal is a long term goal.

You won't achieve it overnight -- and you
won't achieve it easily. It will take a long
time -- and plenty of chalk and sweat --
to get there.

Your goal is the greatest motivator you
could ever find. It burns with a white hot
fire every second of every day.

And it will carry you to greatness.

So take a second, and think about it.

Why are you training?

What's your goal?

And what do you need to do to make it a
reality?

Answer those questions, and you've taken
an important first step on the road to
strength, muscle and might.

As always, thanks for reading and have a
great day. If you train today, make it a
good one.

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik
