The Dinosaur Christmas Story - Part 1

A very special Christmas card from my good friend Bill Hinbern - it actually comes from old-time strongman and gym owner Sig Klein - but Bill worked his holiday magic and changed the name on the card!

[Note: It's a Dinosaur Training tradition to give
you a special Christmas story in daily installments.
Here's part one of this year's Christmas story. I hope
you enjoy it!]

The Masked Man's Christmas (Part 1)

The crowd roared with anger as the hulking masked man
stomped mercilessly on his opponent.

The referee pushed him away, waving his finger in a
stern warning.

"Clean it up, buddy!" he said. "Clean it up and start
wrestling!"

The masked man gazed back impassively. All you could
see were his eyes. They were dark, deep and hard, like
twin chunks of obsidian.

The referee glanced behind him. The other wrestler was
still down, lying flat on the canvas. He hadn't so much
as moved after the masked man had delivered a crushing
body slam.

The referee didn't know if he was playing possum or if
he'd really had the wind knocked out of him. It happened
sometimes. The men knew how to fall, but sometimes they
hit harder than expected.

The referee knew his job. He decided to give the fallen
man more time to recover.

He waved his finger at the masked man.

"Stay here!" he ordered.

He stepped back to the fallen man and began a long, slow
count, waving his arms to punctuate each tick of the
clock.

"ONE!"

No response from the fallen wrestler.

"TWO!"

Still no response.

"THREE!"

Nothing. Maybe he was really hurt. Maybe it would be
better to slow the count down.

He swept his hands wide and low, leaning over the fallen
man.

"FOUR!"

Not even a twitch!

Meanwhile, the fans were going wild, shouting and screaming,
begging and pleading, imploring their favorite to get up.

An elderly woman walked to the side of the ring, held onto
the lowest ring rope, and screamed in the fallen man's ear.

"GET BACK ON YOUR FEET AND MURDER THE BUM!"
she hollered.

The crowd took up the chant.

"Kill him! Murder the bum!"

The referee bit his lip to keep from laughing out loud. With
Christmas a mere five days away, the crowd was hardly in a
Holiday mood.

"FIVE!"

The fallen man moved his left foot.

"SIX!"

The fallen man groaned.

"SEVEN!"

The fallen man rolled to his side.

"EIGHT!"

The fallen man pushed himself to his knees.

"NINE!"

The masked wrestler bulled forward, grabbed his opponent
by the ears, yanked him to his feet, picked him up, held
him high -- and then slammed him to the mat.

He hit the canvas with a bone-crushing thud, bounced, and
lay still.

The referee knew he could count to a 100 this time. It
wouldn't make any difference.

He had to sell it. The match couldn't end with a knockout.
That would make it three in a row for the masked giant.

He turned to the time-keeper at the side of the ring.

"Ring the bell!" he said. "Ring the bell!"

He turned to the masked man.

"YOU'RE DISQUALIFIED!" he roared.

The dark eyes flickered -- and suddenly, without conscious
thought, the referee was out of the ring, down the aisle
and running for his life.

The masked man turned to his fallen opponent and pointed.

He held up his other hand, three fingers spread wide apart.

The meaning was unmistakable.

Three matches. Three knockouts!

And that's when the crowd went totally, utterly berserk. The fans
stormed the ring, swinging and kicking and clawing. They threw
eggs, fruit, cups, bottles, cigars, cigarettes, rocks and bricks.

It took four tries and half a dozen broken heads before the squad
of six burly policemen could get the architect of the insanity
out of the ring, through the crowd and back into the dressing
room. They shoved the door open, pushed him inside and stood
outside while he showered and dressed.

The sergeant eyed the crowd uneasily. It was more of a mob than
anything else. He'd never seen anything like it.

He turned to one of his men.

"Step inside and tell him to hurry up," he said. "I don't like the
looks of this."

The officer stepped into the dressing room.

Thirty seconds later he stepped back out.

"He's gone!" he said.

"Gone?"

"Gone! The back window's open. He must have crawled out and
climbed down."

"Let me see!"

The sergeant stepped into the room and looked it over -- and
saw something that made him stop dead in his tracks, his
eyes wide with surprise.

Six bottles of liquid refreshment stood on a small table next
to a cracked mirror. Each bottle stood on a five dollar bill.

A note lay next to the bottles.

"Thanks, Pete -- and Merry Christmas to you and the men!"

The sergeant pushed his cap back and ran his thick hand through
his dark hair.

"How in the heck did he know my name?" he asked.

TO BE CONTINUED.

Spartan Is Best

World and Olympic champion John Davis spent much of his career training alone in the basement of a neighborhood church in Brooklyn - but he became one of the greatest lifters of all time!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

Two quick notes, and then we'll talk training.

1. Old Strength Magazines for
Sale

I'm selling tons of old strength magazines,
including the vintage magazines on these
two lists:

impossible to find anywhere else.

2. The November Dino Files

Is available right here in PDF format:

Nov. Dino Files

It's a great issue - with an excellent
article by one of our long time Dinos,
detailing a new workout he used to
gain (get this) 25 pounds of muscle
in just a couple of months.

Meanwhile, I'm finishing up the
December issue - and it's looking
like another good one! Be looking
for it soon.

3. Spartan Is Best!

On the training front, let's talk about true
Spartan training -- and I don't mean the
so-called "300 workout" they did for the
movie.

There's a great book by Daniel Coyle called
"The Little Book of Talent." It contains 52
rules for improving your performance in
sports, business, job, school, or anything
else.

Coyle studied top performers in a wide
range of disciplines, and found a number
of similarities between the top performers.

They tended to do certain things in the
same ways.

One thing he noted about many highly
skilled, top performers was that they
trained in spartan quarters -- particularly
when they were climbing the ladder.

For example, a top tennis school might
have the future stars of the sport playing
on courts with cracks in them and grass
or weeds pushing up here and there.

A top ski school might look like a 1950s era
scout camp, with the future greats living in
very simple, almost primitive log cabins.

A top high school might have the smartest
kids on the planet studying in what looks
more or less like an old army barracks.

And I'm not making these up. They're real
life examples from Coyle's book.

In contrast, many "fancy" facilities didn't
have a very good track record when it
came to creating successful performers.

The parallel to effective strength training is
obvious. The so-called "fitness" industry
pushes high-tech training in opulent "gyms"
featuring lots of chrome, mirrors, fancy lighting,
air conditioning, aromatherapy, piped in music,
cardio theater, big screen plasma tv's, espresso
bars, donuts, pizza delivery, and row after row
of plushly padded machines.

Soft and gentle is the mantra of the day.

Spartan it is not.

It's the furthest thing in the world from
Spartan.

And that's one of the big reasons why the
Chrome and Fern Pleasure Palace Gyms
don't deliver.

They're too fancy. Too nice. Too pretty.

And fancy, nice and pretty don't work in the
Iron Game.

They never have - and they never will.

As always, thanks for reading and have a
great day. If you train today, make it a
good one!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

P.S. Dinosaur Training started a back to
basics, strength training revolution when
I published it back in 1996 - and it's

Will Weight Training Stunt Your Growth?

John Grimek's father and older brother didn't want him to lift weights - because they were afraid it would stunt his growth!

December issue - and it's looking
like another good one! Be looking
for it soon.

3. Does Weight Training Stunt Your
Growth?

Back in the day, many well-meaning
people believed that weight training
would stunt your growth.

Meaning that if you started weight
lifting as a teenager, you'd stop
growing to what would otherwise
have been your natural height.

I have no idea who started this idea,
or where it came from - but it was
very firmly entrenched for many
years.

Heck, I can remember people saying
it back when I started training in the
1960's.

And it was around long before that.

In fact, the most famous weight trainer
of the 1930's, 40's and 50's almost
didn't start training - because his
father believed that weight training
would stunt his growth.

Yes, I'm speaking of John Grimek.

Yes, THAT John Grimek.

Two-time Mr. America, Mr. USA and
Mr. Universe. The top bodybuilder of
his generation. Undefeated in body-
building contests.

Senior National Weightlifting Champion.

North American Weightlifting Champion.

American record holder in the military
press.

Unofficial World record holder in the
military press.

The man they called "the Monarch of
Muscledom."

THAT John Grimek.

John Grimek was a short little kid -
and his father and older brother
were worried that weight training
would keep him from growing any
taller.

So they told John he couldn't lift
weights!

They were so serious about it that
when John's older brother headed
out of town for a summer job at a
logging camp, he put his weights
in a big wooden box, wrapped it
up with a big chain, and locked it
with a padlock - and then took the
key with him!

Of course, younger brothers can
break into anything - and John
broke into the box - and took out
the weights and started training
in secret.

Anyhow, that's just one example
of how the belief that "stunt your
growth" fear almost stopped a
legendary training career.

But will weight training REALLY
stunt your growth?

Maybe not.

In fact, maybe it will make you
taller!

Check this out . . .

For the past couple of years, John
Wood has been doing a special
training program to build his bones
to their maximum.

He's been getting regular DEXA tests
to see how it works - and the tests
show that he's increased his bone
mass enormously as a result of the
special training program.

But he's also done something else that
is pretty remarkable.

In fact, something that many people
would tell you is impossible.

After he began following his special
bone strength program, John began
to grow taller.

In his most recent check-up, he was
measured again - and he's grown a
full inch taller.

From 6'3" to 6'4".

So if anyone tells you that weight
training will stunt your growth, tell
them about John Wood and his bone
strength program.

As always, thanks for reading, and
have a great day. if you train today,
make it a good one!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

P.S. You can learn more about John
Wood's Bone Strength Program
