A Question About Heavy Partials - and My Answer!

I've been getting tons of questions about my new training course on heavy partials - so here's the latest one - and my answer to it!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

I hope this email finds you strong,
healthy and powering forward into
the New Year!

And speaking of powering forward -
one of our longtime Dinos - age 72 -
asked if he should try my new course
on heavy partials.

I should note, by the way, that he's
an experienced trainee. He started
training at age 12, and he's been
hitting the iron pretty much ever
since.

So, back to his question . . . should
he give heavy partials a try?

The short answer is YES - but as with
anything else, you need to use some
good old-fashioned common sense.

When you begin doing heavy partials:

1. Start light.

2. Learn the movements and the best
rack positions before you begin to pile
on the weight.

3. Train progressively - with small but
steady increases in weight on the bar.

4. Always warm-up thoroughly before
doing heavy partials.

5. If a particular movement hurts when
you do it - find a different exercise for
the same body part. You can always
find an alternative exercise that works
just as well or even better.

If you do heavy partials the right way,
as outlined above, they should work
fine for you at any age. In fact, many
older Dinos find that they work better
than anything else - and that it's much
easier to recover from your workouts.

And, of course, heavy partials do a
heck of a lot for bone strength and
bone mass - which is very important
for our age 50-plus Dinos.

Anyhow, I think our age-72 Dino
should try my heavy partials program -
but as noted above, I want him to be
smart about it - and use his brain, not
his ego, to dictate his poundages and
his workouts.

How to Build Herculean Super Strength

World and Olympic champion John Davis built plenty of strength and power with old-school, Dino-style training methods.

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

Two quick notes and then we'll talk
training.

1. Strength and Health magazines
for Sale

Trudi and I want to move to the
Pacific Northwest next year, and
that means I need to clear out
all of my duplicate strength books
and magazines.

I'm starting with old issues of Bob
Hoffman's Strength and Health -
over 400 of them - at great prices
in special year by year sets.

Go here for the complete list:

Strength and Health mags

I'll be listing other items later
today and for the next week or
so - as you might imagine, I have
a ton of them - and I want to find
good homes for them - meaning,
I want them to go to Dinos.

2. The Dinosaur Files

Go here to grab the Sept-Oct and
Nov issues of The Dinosaur Files
strength training newsletter:

Nov 2018 Dino Files

Sept-Oct Dino Files

Meanwhile, I'm working away as
fast as Possible on the Dec issue -
and yes, it's going to be another
good one.

3. How to Build Herculean
Super Strength

45 years ago, Bradley J. Steiner wrote
a great little book with one of the best
titles in the history of the world:

"Powerlifting and the Development of
Herculean Super-Strength."

Good title, huh?

In the book, Steiner focused on building
four key areas:

1. Your legs and hips

2. Your back

3. Your shoulder girdle

and

4. Your chest

The theory was, if you built plenty of
strength and muscle mass in those four
key areas, you'd end up with plenty of
strength and muscle mass from head
to toe.

And it's a valid theory. It works. By
focusing on these four critical areas,
you build maximum strength and
muscle throughout your entire body.

And here's another tip. Or rather, three
of them. These come from me, but I
think Steiner would approve of them:

1. Power rack training

2. Rest-pause training

3. Heavy singles

Why do these help build Herculean
super-strength?

Because they let you train with HEAVY
WEIGHTS.

And make no mistake about it -- heavy
weights are what it takes to build
Herculean super-strength.

That was true 45 years ago - and it's
still true today.

And it will always be true.

Today, tomorrow, and forever.

As always, thanks for reading and
have a great day. If you train today,
make it a good one!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

This Is Kind of Amazing!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

When you write about real world,
no nonsense strength training and
muscle building, you walk a lonely
path.

Most of the other stuff is about
totally different stuff:

Drugs

Supplements

More drugs

New drugs

More supplements

New supplements

Gossip columns

Bodybuilding contests

The "latest" version of the Super
Blast Mega-Muscle Bulgarian Blitz
program - or whatever they're
calling it this week.

And so on.

And that's the world of the mass
market muscle media.

My world is much different.

There's a very small number of
people who write about MY kind
of training.

Bill Hinbern is one.

Bradley J. Steiner is another.

And John Wood is a third.

And that leads me to something that's
nothing short of amazing.

Yesterday we released my new book
on Kindle:

100 Strength Training Tips for
Combat Athletes

http://www.brookskubik.com/100-combat-tips.html

So last night I went over to take
a look at the sales numbers - and
the little monster was ranked No.
1 - meaning NUMERO UNO - in
new releases in the category of
weight training books.

Number 1 in less than 24 hours.

That's fast.

And it's also pretty amazing for a
book that focuses on hard and
heavy, back to the basics
strength and power training.

But here's something else that's
even more amazing.

The top six books in New Releases
for weight training books included
one by me - and two by John Wood.

That means that the old-school, hard
and heavy, roll up your sleeves, grit,
grime, dig deep, puff, pant and
perspire stuff was kicking the
heck out of all of the other the
other stuff.

In other words, the Dinos had taken
over.

The bunnies were in full retreat.

Chrome and Fern Land was shaking
at its very core.

The Gentle Blasters were running
for cover.

John's two books in the top 6 were
on Trap Bar training. I assume you
have them, but if not, grab them -
they're very good:

Trap Bar Training Book No. 2

http://www.oldtimestrongman.com/trapbartraining2.html

Trap Bar Training Book No. 1

http://www.oldtimestrongman.com/trapbartraining.html

If memory serves correctly, both
of John's books had been No. 1 in
new releases - and since they're
still in the top 6, they're still selling
like hotcakes.

And to make things even more fun,
I had another book in the No. 1
spot in Kindle's new releases just
a couple of weeks ago.

It was my book on Heavy Partials for
building strength and power:

Dinosaur Strength and Power -
Course No. 2 - Heavy Partials

Kindle edition

http://www.brookskubik.com/heavypartials-kindle.html

PDF edition

http://www.brookskubik.com/dinosaurstrengthandpower-02.html

Anyhow, do us both a favor.

Help keep us in the no. 1 spot for
as long as possible - and help keep
us in the top 6 rankings for as long
as possible.

Grab any or all of our Kindle books -
leave reviews for them - read and
rank other reviews - tell your friends
and workout buddies about our
books - spread the word on social
media - and generally do everything
you can to help share the message.

Our goal is total and complete
domination - meaning that we
won't stop until strength training
is back where it needs to be - with
its original focus on the real world
stuff that gives great results as fast
and efficiently as possible.

I can't do it alone - and neither can
John Wood - but with your help, we
can all do it together.

Thanks - and happy reading!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

Take a Peek Inside the November Dinosaur Files!

Each issue of the Dinosaur Files is jam-packed with great old-school workouts and training advice for drug-free trainees - and the November 2018 issue is no exception!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

We released the November issue of
The Dinosaur Files yesterday, and
Dinos around the world have been
snatching it up like hotcakes.

And that's great - because it's a
heck of an issue.

Take a peek inside:

It begins with a turbo-charged
editorial I wrote - a true story
about a dark and deadly night
on the North Atlantic - an SOS
signal - and how two very
different men on different ships
responded to the signal.

No, it's not about lifting - or sets
and reps - but it's an incredibly
strong and motivating story - and
it will get you revved up and ready
to go - and ready to respond to
any call for help you may ever
encounter.

And then we turn to training - starting
with reports from our readers.

Abbreviated training - a report from a
63-year old Dino.

20-rep Trap Bar deadlifts.

Abbreviated workouts and aging joints.

An update from a 74-year old Dino and
how he trains.

A report from a man who found what
works for him training-wise.

And more:

The vitamin everyone over age 50 needs
to take. (Do you know what it is?)

Some very bad advice that could kill you -
or make you very sick - and how to avoid
falling for it. (Advice that I fell for - and
that you probably fell for if you're my
age. Heck, you may STILL be falling for
it.)

A simple "stay busy/stay active" program
that I use every day here at Dino Head-
quarters.

A detailed report by one of our readers on
his special training program to build strength
and muscle mass - and how he used it to
gain 25 pounds of solid muscle in just
four
months. Exercises, workouts, sets,
reps - it's all here - the whole thing - every
detail covered in full.

A salute to one of our recently departed
Dinos - a man who began following my
work way back in 1996 when I first pub-
lished Dinosaur Training - and how his
tradition lives on.

A detailed article from a cancer survivor
about how to keep on training after cancer
or other major illness - with information
you won't see anywhere else - and things
the medical community doesn't even
begin to understand.

And finally - a special "do it anywhere"
workout to use when you're traveling -
as many of you will be next week at
Thanksgiving time.

In short, it's a great issue - and you can
find it right here:

Happy reading!

Brooks Kubik

A Training Program You've Never Seen Before!

Breaking news! There's something brand new for Dinos - and it features a super-effective workout that you've never seen before!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

John Wood has just released The John
Wood Report No. 5.

You can grab it right here:

https://www.oldtimestrongman.com/johnwoodreport05.html

As always, it includes some great
articles - but one article in particular
stands out.

It's an update on John's unique Bone
Strength Training program - except
he's doing things a bit differently
than before.

In fact, he's doing something that
I've never seen before - or read
about before - and never tried.

And I seriously doubt if anyone else
in the world is doing it.

But it may be the very best thing
ever for building bone strength
and bone mass.

Which means it may be one of the
very best things ever for older Dinos.

Or Dinos of any age - because bone
strength and bone mass is important
at any age.

So grab a copy - it costs less than the
price of one of those mocha monkey
cappuccino latte drinks at the trendy
coffee shops - and read it through -
and see for yourself exactly what
I'm talking about - and then decide
if you want to try working it into
your own program.

And yes - I do plan on trying it -
and I bet a lot of you are going
to do the very same thing.

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

Important Tips for Bottom Position Squats

Like all great champions, John Grimek always did plenty of squatting. Heavy leg and back training is the Royal Road to Muscle and Might!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

I got an email from Nick C., who wrote:

"Hi Brooks!

I'm planning on starting a leg specialization
program that will use the bottom position
squat singles you prescribe in workout no.
39 in Chalk and Sweat.

I'm going to start with 6 x 5 with regular
Olympic squats, followed by five sets of
progressively heavier singles in the bottom
position squat.

I was wondering how you would suggest
increasing weight for this routine. Should
I try to add 5 or 10 lbs. to my top single
every week or every other week?

Should I also be adding weight at the
same rate to the regular squats?

I guess I really want to know how you
did your weight progression on this
program when you had such great
success with it."

Thanks for your question, Nick, and
have fun with your squat program. It
will build some serious strength and
muscle. As I mention in Chalk and
Sweat, I added almost 200 pounds
to my squat by using bottom position
squats.

BTW, in case anyone is unfamiliar
with them, bottom position squats are
performed in the power rack. You set
the bar on pins placed so it is low
enough that you can get under the
bar and start the squat from the
bottom.

It's much harder than the conventional
way of doing squats -- which is why it
is so effective.

Of course, it's an ADVANCED training
technique. Don't use it unless you can
handle at least 300 pounds for sets of
5 reps in good, deep form.

Some people find that pause squats work
just as well or better for them than bottom
position squats. Personally, I prefer bottom
position squats for powerlifting squats
(low bar, starting from parallel), and
pause squats for OL squats (high bar,
donkey to grass full squats). I also
prefer pause squats for front squats.

As far as progression goes, do this:

1. Start light and easy and use the first
four to six weeks as a break-in period.

a. You need to start light on the bottom
position squat. It's much harder than you
think it is.

b. Let me repeat that - start light!

2. After you start to feel comfortable with
the exercise, train it hard and try to add five
pounds to the bar every week for as long
as you can.

3. At some point, your gains will slow
down, and it will become harder and
harder to add the five pounds. When
that happens, change the progression
to five pounds every other week. Do
that for as long as possible.

4. Try adding weight to your regular
squats at the same rate as the bottom
position squats at the start of the
program, when the weights are light.

a. When the weights get heavier, your
poundage increases on the regular squats
will be slower because the bottom position
squats are a new exercise for you, and they
have much more room for improvement.

You can try two workouts a week when
the weights are light, but one workout a
week will probably work better as the
weights get heavier.

I hope that helps, and again, have fun on
the program!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

A New PR in Two Short Weeks!

I launched my new Heavy Partials training course earlier this year, and many of you grabbed it and made BIG GAINS in strength, power and muscle mass -  and you made them very, very fast.

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

I launched my new Heavy Partials training
course earlier this year, and many of you
have grabbed it and are giving the pro-
gram a try.

That means we're getting a ton of great
feedback on it. Many of you made BIG
GAINS on the program - and you made
them VERY FAST.

For example . . .

One of our many Texas Dinos has been
doing plenty of heavy bench press partials
ever since he got the course - and in just
two weeks he set a new PR in the
bench
press.

Think about that for a second.

New course - do it for just two weeks -
and BOOM - new PR.

That's not too shabby.

It's also not a surprise.

Thirty years ago, when I was competing in
drug-free bench press and powerlifting con-
tests, I traveled from Louisville to Jackson-
ville to compete in a National bench press
contest.

My goal was to set a new age group World
record in one of the two powerlifting feder-
ations I lifted in.

Long story short, I won my age group and
weight class - but missed the World record
attempt.

I was steamed.

I drove back to Louisville cussing and fuming
the whole way.

I went on a special all-partials bench press
program for just two weeks - entered another
National Championship contest in Edison,
New Jersey - and set the new record.

When I set the record, I made an EASY lift
with the weight I had missed just two weeks
earlier in Jacksonville.

So in case you were wondering - yes, this
stuff works.

It works fast.

And it works great.

Go here, grab the new course, and see for
yourself. It's available in PDF or Kindle,
whichever you prefer:
