More Spartan than Ever!

The outdoor lifting area at Dino Headquarters is as Spartan as it comes - but it's a great place to train!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

A quick heads-up and then we'll talk
training.

The Dinosaur Files should be coming
out later today or tonight. I'll send an
email when it's ready.

We're running a bit late, so this will be
a combined May-June issue - an extra
big issue, with some killer workouts -
including a special challenge workout
that I know you're going to want to
try.

It comes from far away and long ago,
and you do it with - well, heck, I won't
spoil it for you.

But you're gonna love it!

On the training front . . .

I started out training at home, with a
basic barbell and dumbbell set.

I trained in my bedroom.

As you can imagine, it was pretty
Spartan.

Over the years, I've trained in many
different places - but I've spent the
most time (by far) in a basement or
garage gym.

They were all similar - nothing fancy -
pretty Spartan - basic but functional.

But last night's workout was in a gym
that was about as Spartan as they
come.

It was the outside training area here at
Dino Headquarters.

I set up two 4 x 4 squares of 1/4" rubber
matting on the concrete drive in back of
our garage, rolled out the dumbbells, and
I was ready to go - in the most Spartan
gym you ever saw.

But Spartan was all I needed.

I stretched, loosened my shoulders,
chalked my hands and got going.

It was 90 degrees with high humidity,
and there's no AC when you train out-
side, so it was hot.

Darn hot.

I trained pretty much non-stop for 90
minutes, and probably lost about 4 or
5 pounds during the workout.

And that was with drinking plenty of
water - as in, going through my stain-
less steel water bottle not once but
twice - for a total of 34 ounces of
clear, cold, and much needed water.

I did swings, cleans, presses, squats,
rowing, and a ton of other things.

By the time I finished, my shirt was
completely soaked, my hair was matted,
my glasses were covered in sweat so bad
I could hardly see, and I looked like I had
been training outside in a rain storm.

But I felt great.

I put the mats and the dumbbells away,
closed and locked the garage door, and
headed upstairs for a long, cold shower
followed by dinner and plenty of water.

Trudi looked up as I walked inside.

"Looks like you had a good one,"
she said.

And she was right.

Spartan workouts are always good.

As always, thanks for reading and have
a great day. If you train today, make it
a good one!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

Sig Klein's Dumbbell Challenge

Sig Klein - pictured above - was a master of herculean hand-balancing - but he also was a master of old-school dumbbell lifting - and this led him to issue one of the most famous challenges of all time.

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

Couple of quick notes, and then we'll talk
training.

2. The May Dino Files

. . .  is running late  - because I've been
buried in a very big, unexpected project.

But it should be ready soon - and I'll send
an email when it's ready to go.

This issue has a terrific Challenge Workout
that you're going to want to try - as well as
some great "from the trenches" articles by
older Dinos - and a deep dive into one of
the most popular training programs of the
1940's and 50's - with some interesting
and effective ways to incorporate it into
your current program.

3. My New Course

I've got a brand new training course out,
and I think you're going to like it a lot.

It covers old-school arm training - not the
pump stuff, but the kind of training that
builds plenty of strength and power. I call
it "strength-style arm training."

It comes in a downloadable and printable
PDF - and you get a special bonus with it -
four workout charts. You can print them
out, make copies and use them to keep
track of your workouts.

4. Sig Klein's Dumbbell Challenge

The legendary Sig Klein had one of the best
gyms in the entire world, featuring a stunning
collection of old-time barbells, dumbbells and
kettlebells.

Klein used all of these tools in his own training,
along with some serious bodyweight work (he
was a master of herculean hand-balancing and
was great at strict-style handstand push-ups
and tiger bends). But dumbbells may have been
Klein's favorite tool.

Klein wrote a number of articles about old-school
dumbbell training. He believed that one particular
dumbbell exercise was the secret of the super
strength and remarkable lifting ability of the
old-time European weightlifting champions.

What was the exercise?

It was the two dumbbell clean and press --
performed for reps. One clean and one press
on every rep. The first clean from the floor,
and the the rest of them from the hang.

In one of his earliest articles, way back in
the 1930s, Klein issued a challenge to all
weightlifters and bodybuilders in the USA.

The challenge was to perform 12 continuous
reps in the two dumbbell clean and press with
a pair of 75-pound dumbbells.

Klein was able to do this himself -- at a weight
of about 150 to 155 pounds -- so in his case,
he was using a pair of dumbbells equal to his
own bodyweight -- for TWELVE non-stop reps.

That's a remarkable performance -- but Sig
Klein was a remarkable strongman.

Even today, almost 100 years later, Klein's
challenge is hard to meet -- and his own
performance, on a pound for pound basis,
is almost impossible to match.

John Grimek performing the two dumbbell alternate press - an exercise he learned from Sig Klein.

Of course, if you rolled out the dumbbells
and started to work toward Klein's challenge,
some very good things would happen:

1. You'd get really strong.

2. You'd build tremendous conditioning.

3. You'd add some serious muscle to your
entire upper body -- especially your upper
back, shoulder girdle and arms.

4. You'd become a pressing machine.

5. You'd be able to toy with dumbbells that
most trainees can't even lift off the floor.

Hey, I sound like I just issued a challenge
of my own!

If I did, it's a good one. Just ask Sig Klein!

As always, thanks for reading and have a
great day. If you train today, make it a good
one.

Yours in strength,
Brooks Kubik

Dino-mania.

3. My New Course

I've got a brand new training course out,
and it's a good one.

It covers old-school arm training - not the
pump stuff, but the kind of training that
builds plenty of strength and power.

It's based on Doug Hepburn's workouts -
and Hepburn, you may remember, was
the only man in history to set World
records in:

1, The bench press

2. The military press

3. The barbell curl

Which kind of proves that he had pretty
strong arms - and that's why I based
this course on his unique and effective
arm training techniques.

It comes in a downloadable and printable
PDF - and you get a special bonus with it -
four workout charts. You can print them
out, make copies and use them to keep
track of your workouts.

4. When In Doubt, Try Dumbbells!

That's the title of an article by Harry
Paschall - and Harry sure as heck
knew what he was talking about.

If your training is in a rut, try dumb-
bells.

If you're trying to increase your military
press and nothing seems to work, try
dumbbells.

If you want to slap some serious muscle
onto your arms and shoulders, try dumb-
bells.

If you're looking for a perfect set-up for
home gym training, try dumbbells.

If your shoulders are sore and beat up
from years of living and lifting, try
dumbbells.

If you're looking for a good cardio work-
out that doesn't involve running, jogging,
or any kind of expensive cardio machine,
try dumbbells.

If you're looking for something that's
perfect for your son or daughter when
they want to start training, try dumbbells.

If you're looking for something that you
can do pretty much anywhere - including
outside in the sun and fresh air - try
dumbbells.

If you're looking for something that will
keep you young, strong, well-coordinated,
and athletic as you add candles to your
birthday cake, try dumbbells.

If you're looking for something that the
old-timers used to use - something that
gives you a direct link to Sandow, Saxon,
Grimek, Stanko, Klein, Hoffman, Paschall,
Hepburn, Davis and Anderson - try
dumbbells.

In short, dumbbells are great for pretty
much anything.

Of course, you have to use them the right
way - which is why I wrote a complete
book on old-school dumbbell training.

It's called Dinosaur Dumbbell Training -
and it's a really good one - for pretty
much anyone.

The exercises in Dinosaur Dumbbell
Training will build plenty of strength,
muscle and power - and the workouts
in the book (there are 50 of them) are
all fast, fun and effective.

You can grab the little monster right
here:

http://www.brookskubik.com/dinosaur_dumbbelltraining.html

Also - if you'd like me to sign your book
for you - just ask for an autograph when
you place your order. There's no charge
for an autograph - it's an honor to be
asked for one - and it will make your
book all the more special.

As always, thanks for reading and have
a great day. If you train today, make it
a good one.

Brooks Kubik
