Going Strong at 72!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

If you'd like to see an example of how weightlifting keeps you young, I have  avery interesting video for you.

It features two weightlifters. But they're not lifting weights. They're having a friendly little wrestling match.

One of the weightlifters is 19-year old Jared Fleming. Jared stands 5' 8" and competes in the 94 kilo (208 pounds) weight class -- so he probably weighs something like 210 to 215 pounds in the video.

Jared is the number one ranked weightlifter in the USA under the age of 20. He holds three junior American records and two national collegiate records. In other words, he's one of the strongest and most powerful young men in the country.

The other man is 72-year old Zygmunt Smalcerz, the Head Coach of the USA Weightlifting Team. He wa sborn in Poland back in 1941, and competed for Poland at the 1972 Olympic Games -- where he won the gold medal inw eightlifitng in the flyweight class (less than 52 kilos/120 pounds). I don't know what he weighs now, but it's not much more than his competition weight -- and perhaps it's a little bit less.

So you have 210 pounds of 19-year old super athlete against a 72-year old man who weighs 110 or 120 pounds. I won't spoil it by telling you what happens, but here's the important point -- how many 72-year old men would wrestle with a 19-year old Olympic weightlifting star who outweighs him by close to 100 pounds? Even if they're not going full speed, how many 72-year old men would do it?

It's very obvious that Coach Smalcerz is in remarkable shape for a 72-year old man -- and weightlifting is what did it for him. Weightlifting has given him the strength, speed and athleticism of a man 20 or 30 years younger. Watch the video and see for yourself!
