Hail to the Dinosaurs!
Last weekend was busy as heck. We travelled to
Cincinati to attend a surprise birthday party for
Hall of Fame coach Kim Wood -- and met a ton
of great people and had loads of fun.
The next day, Bill Hinbern and I sat down at a
table in a hotel conference room and smiled at
a video camera -- and started to talk about
old-school iron.
There was no cameraman -- no technical crew --
no cue cards -- no teleprompter -- no music --
no audience -- and no laugh machine.
It was just two guys who love old-school strength
training and physical culture -- sharing their
combined experience of more than 100 years in
the Iron Game.
We talked for over 90 minutes -- probably close
to two hours.
I haven't listened to the interview, so I'm not
sure what it looks like or how it sounds. We're
going to edit it this week, and put it up on You-
Tube so you can see it. I'll send a link when it's
ready.
I think you're really going to like it -- especially
because Bill Hinbern has tons of great stories to
share -- and almost never does an interview --
and Bill and I have never done an interview
together. So this is going to be something
very unique, and very special.
Until then, here's some other stuff you might
enjoy:
1. My Interview with Bill Kociaba and Clarence
Bass
Here's part 2 of my recent podcast interview
with Bill Kociaba and Clarence Bass:

2. The Iron League
John Wood's new members-only site is getting
better all the time -- with more great stuff being
added faster than you can read or watch it all:
http://www.ironleague.com/
3. Dinosaur Strength Training Secrets, Vol. 3
Vol. 3 in my new series of courses covers some
of the most effective old-school progression systems
that will help you make steady gains without burning
out, going stale or hitting one of those dead-end
sticking points that are so common for most trainees.
It's available in your choice of hard-copy or
Kindle e-book:
Hard-copy edition

Kindle e-book edition
http://www.brookskubik.com/dinosaur_secrets3_kindle.html
4. The Dinosaur Files Quarterly
The June issue of the Dinosaur Files Quarterly is
being printed even as I type this. We'll put up an order
page sometime in the next 24 hours so you can order
your copy of the little monster.
Beginning with this issue, the Dinosaur Files Quarterly
will be available in both hard-copy and Kindle e-book
editions. The hard-copy edition will be ready first --
the Kindle e-book edition should be ready by this time
next week or perhaps a bit earlier.
I'll keep you posted on the Dinosaur Files in my daily
emails.
Anyhow, you're going to be having tons of great stuff
to watch, read and listen to -- and that means, it's
going to be as GREAT month for the Dinos.
As always, thanks for reading and have a great day.
If you train today, make it a good one!
Yours in strength,
Brooks Kubik

Try this for Dino-Style Cardio!
Hail to the Dinosaurs!
Here's a quick head's up and link to a recent
interview I did with Bill Kociaba and Clarence
Bass (of "Ripped" fame). As you can imagine,
we covered a wide variety of topics. I think
you'll enjoy it:
http://kociaba-fitness.com/blog_rwf_17_brooks_clarence_pt_1
On the training front, we've been talking
about Dino-style cardio -- meaning the kind
of cardio that works for Iron Slingers as
opposed to 130 pound long-distance
runners.
Here's some great feedback from one of
your fellow Dinos:
"When it comes to cardio, everyone always
looks at the obvious things, like running,
walking, sports, etc. People often overlook
the simplest thing, which to me is staying
active.
I lift hard three times per week and eat a
very healthy diet. I also stay very active.
I do all my own yard work and house
projects. I tend my garden. I take my
hunting dog for an hour long walk three
or four times per week.
When I have free time I go fishing or
hunting. I will spend all afternoon
walkimng a stream looking for trout,
or hiking a hillside looking for game
birds or deer. As an added bonus,
whatever I catch or kill I throw on
the grill to make a healthy meal.
Very rarely do I sit on my couch and
do nothing. I like to be busy.
My weight has stayed around 205 for
years, and my gains have continued.
Good strength training, a healthy diet,
and an active lifestyle is all I need.
William"
This reminds me of Jim Park, the Mr. America
and Mr. Universe winner from the 1950s. (No
relation to English bodybuilder Reg Park.)
He never did cardio or much in the way of gut
work -- but he spent the weekends out in the
rugged hills and forests of Pennsylvania, hiking
and hunting.
It was all he needed -- along with his barbell and
dumbbell work -- and at contest time he was in
superb condition: lean, hard and muscular.
So the bottom line is this: train hard, stay active,
eat smart -- and stay strong!
As always, thanks for reading and have a great
day. If you train today, make it a good one!
Yours in strength,
Brooks Kubik

Assistance Exercises -- When and How Many?
Hail to the Dinosaurs!
Let me open with some birthday wishes to
one of our Dinos -- and then we'll talk about
about assistance exercises.
Today is Bill Kociaba's birthday. Happy
birthday, Bill!
Bill has a great little website where he posts
some killer podcasts. I've been a guest on
several of his podcasts, and I really enjoyed
them. You will, too. Bill knows the Iron Game
inside out, and he has a very natural, very
relaxed interview style.
To celebrate his birthday, Bill posted a long
interview with bodybuilding legend, Bill Pearl.
You can find it right here:
http://kociaba-fitness.com/blog_rwf_13_bill_pearl
In other podcast news, I'll be on Physical Culture
Radio today -- at 12:00 EST. Catch the show live
or listen to the download at your convenience:
http://www.superhumanradio.com
We have a great show planned for today, and I
think you'll really enjoy it.
Assistance Exercises -- When and How Many?
On the training front, I received lots of questions in
response to yesterday's email. Most of them were
about assistance exercises for the press -- and I
realized that some readers thought they were
supposed to do all seven of the exercises that
I listed in my email.
And that means I wasn't very clear -- and I
created some unnecessary confusion. So let
me clear things up right now.
Many Dinos don't need any sort of assistance
exercise for the press. All they need to do is to
train hard on the press.
As you get stronger, and your gains slow down, you
can add ONE assistance exercise. Use different
assistance exercises in different training cycles.
Don't try to do all of them in one program.
As for WHEN you do them -- I prefer to do them
after my presses. That's what virtually all of the
champions did their assistance exercises.
For your sets, reps and workouts, grab a copy of The
Dinosaur Military Press and Shoulder Power Course:
Hard-copy:
http://www.brookskubik.com/militarypress_course.html
Kindle e-book:
http://www.brookskubik.com/militarypress_kindle.html
Let me close by reminding you of two things.
One is the Norb Schemansky story.
A young trainee asks Schemansky how to improve
his press.
Schemansky glares at him in surprise -- and
then shouts:
"Press, you idiot!"
In other words, NO assistance exercises.
BUT -- and this is important -- Harry Paschall reported
that Schemansky improved his press big time by doing
heavy dumbbell presses.
In other words, ONE assistance exercise.
Hope that clears up the confusion!
As always, thanks for reading, and have a great
day. If you train today, make it a good one.
Yours in strength,
Brooks Kubik
P.S. I'm doing a detailed series of new courses
covering different aspects of old-school, Dino-style
strength training. We've released two of them so
far, and they're available in your choice of hard-
copy or Kindle e-book:
a. Dinosaur Training Secrets, Vol. 1.
"Exercises, Workouts and Training
Programs"
Kindle e-book:

The Bob Hoffman - George Jowett Seal of Approval
Hail to the Dinosaurs!
I did a podcast with Bill Kociaba of Kociaba
Fitness yesterday. It's the second one I've
done with Bill, and he's great to work with.
He's been training and following the Iron
Game for over 40 years, and he really
knows his stuff.
You can catch the first show here -- along
with some other good ones from people
you will know. Yesterday's show will go
up in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know
when it does.
My first interview with Bill Kociaba:
http://kociaba-fitness.com/blog_an_interview_with_brooks_kubik
In any case, in yesterday's interview
we were talking about the new quarterly
Dinosaur Files, and I was telling Bill about
the special bonus for everyone who orders
issue no. 1 of the new quarterly Dinosaur
Files.
Bill almost fell out of his chair when he heard
about it. He thought it was pretty darn cool.
And so do I.
So I thought I should share the details with
everyone else.
When Bob Hoffman started Strength and
Health magazine back in 1932, he worked
with George F. Jowett, the world-famous
author of The Key to Might and Muscle,
and one of the best-loved Iron Game
writers of all time.
One of the things they did was to launch
the American Strength and Health
League -- which they did in the very
first issue, almost exactly 82 years
ago.
They said -- and I quote:
"The American Strength and Health League
is the finest organization under the sun for
people interested in any form of sport or
exercising, body building and strength. It
is a genuine organization created to help
you succeed. Prizes of all kinds are given
for development, improvement in body
building, in strength or for excellence or
perserverence in any sport."
The first members of the American Strength
and Health League included Bob Hoffman,
George F. Jowett, Henry "Milo" Steinborn,
Joe Lambert, Bill Lily, Harry Good, and
Bob Mitchell.
It cost one clam (a lot of wampum back
then) to enroll in the American Strength
and Health League -- but when you did,
you received a special blue and gold
certificate signed by Bob Hoffman and
George F. Jowett.
The certificate was "suitable for framing"
and "will show that you are a man among
men."
So here's where it gets really good for
everyone who orders issue no. 1 of the
new quarterly Dinosaur Files.
I have one of those original certificates --
signed by Bob Hoffman and George F. Jowett.
It's made out to an oldtimer who's no longer
with us. It's not dated, but it's probably
about 80 years old.
We made an exact copy of the certificate
and then used the magic of Photoshop to
replace the oldtimer's name with a blank
line.
We printed the certificates on some nice
looking, special paper that looks and feels
a bit like old parchment, but not as brittle.
Everyone who grabs a copy of issue no. 1
of the quarterly Dinosaur Files gets one of
the certificates -- with his or her name
handwritten by me -- which makes you
a full-fledged "life member of the American
Strength and Health League."
It's a beautiful certificate, suitable for framing,
and it's a great piece of Iron Game history.
In fact, it's so good that I've done one for
myself. It's framed, on the wall, right where
I can look up and see it when I'm working
on Dino projects.
The first issue of the new quarterly Dinosaur
Files is being printed even as I type this email
message.
We'll pick up the copies later today, and start
firing them out the door today, tomorrow and
Monday -- along with those nifty certificates!
Consider it an early Christmas present for
Dinos.
Go here to reserve your copy of the new
quarterly Dinosaur Files and your certificate
of membership in the American Strength
and Health League:
http://www.brookskubik.com/dinosaurfiles_quarterly.html
As always, thanks for reading and have a great
day. If you train today, make it a good one.
Yours in strength,
Brooks Kubik
P.S. If you want to combine your Dinosaur Files
order with any other book, course, DVD or other
Dinosaur Training product, shoot me an email and
ask for shipping quote. We can usually save you
some clams by combining orders in one package:
http://www.brookskubik.com/dinosaurfiles_quarterly.html
P.S. 2. My other books and courses -- and DVD's,
shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies -- are right here:
http://www.brookskubik.com/products.html
P.S. 3. Thought for the Day: "Follow the strength

I did a podcast with Bill Kociaba of Kociaba
Fitness yesterday. It's the second one I've
done with Bill, and he's great to work with.
He's been training and following the Iron
Game for over 40 years, and he really
knows his stuff.
You can catch the first show here -- along
with some other good ones from people
you will know. Yesterday's show will go
up in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know
when it does.
My first interview with Bill Kociaba:
http://kociaba-fitness.com/blog_an_interview_with_brooks_kubik
In any case, in yesterday's interview
we were talking about the new quarterly
Dinosaur Files, and I was telling Bill about
the special bonus for everyone who orders
issue no. 1 of the new quarterly Dinosaur
Files.
Bill almost fell out of his chair when he heard
about it. He thought it was pretty darn cool.
And so do I.
So I thought I should share the details with
everyone else.
When Bob Hoffman started Strength and
Health magazine back in 1932, he worked
with George F. Jowett, the world-famous
author of The Key to Might and Muscle,
and one of the best-loved Iron Game
writers of all time.
One of the things they did was to launch
the American Strength and Health
League -- which they did in the very
first issue, almost exactly 82 years
ago.
They said -- and I quote:
"The American Strength and Health League
is the finest organization under the sun for
people interested in any form of sport or
exercising, body building and strength. It
is a genuine organization created to help
you succeed. Prizes of all kinds are given
for development, improvement in body
building, in strength or for excellence or
perserverence in any sport."
The first members of the American Strength
and Health League included Bob Hoffman,
George F. Jowett, Henry "Milo" Steinborn,
Joe Lambert, Bill Lily, Harry Good, and
Bob Mitchell.
It cost one clam (a lot of wampum back
then) to enroll in the American Strength
and Health League -- but when you did,
you received a special blue and gold
certificate signed by Bob Hoffman and
George F. Jowett.
The certificate was "suitable for framing"
and "will show that you are a man among
men."
So here's where it gets really good for
everyone who orders issue no. 1 of the
new quarterly Dinosaur Files.
I have one of those original certificates --
signed by Bob Hoffman and George F. Jowett.
It's made out to an oldtimer who's no longer
with us. It's not dated, but it's probably
about 80 years old.
We made an exact copy of the certificate
and then used the magic of Photoshop to
replace the oldtimer's name with a blank
line.
We printed the certificates on some nice
looking, special paper that looks and feels
a bit like old parchment, but not as brittle.
Everyone who grabs a copy of issue no. 1
of the quarterly Dinosaur Files gets one of
the certificates -- with his or her name
handwritten by me -- which makes you
a full-fledged "life member of the American
Strength and Health League."
It's a beautiful certificate, suitable for framing,
and it's a great piece of Iron Game history.
In fact, it's so good that I've done one for
myself. It's framed, on the wall, right where
I can look up and see it when I'm working
on Dino projects.
The first issue of the new quarterly Dinosaur
Files is being printed even as I type this email
message.
We'll pick up the copies later today, and start
firing them out the door today, tomorrow and
Monday -- along with those nifty certificates!
Consider it an early Christmas present for
Dinos.

Carved in Iron -- 10 Iron Nuggets from Bob Hoffman!
Hail to the Dinosaurs!
As promised, here's the link to my 9/30 interview on
Carl Lanore's SuperHuman Radio Show:
http://superhumanradio.com/
It's show no. 1500. I'm in the second hour.
I also did a podcast recently with longtime Dino
Bill Kociaba. We covered my new book, KNIFE,
FORK, MUSCLE. You can find it here:
http://kociaba-fitness.com/blog_an_interview_with_brooks_kubik
I'm working with my layout and design team to get the
book to the printer and ship it in mid-Oct. I'll keep you
posted.
On the training front, I thought I'd share some more
Iron Nuggets with you.
These come from Bob Hoffman. Hence the title of this
email message: Carved in Iron. I think Bob would
have liked that.
10 Iron Nuggets from Bob Hoffman
1. "A chain is no stronger than it's weakest link."
2. "You get our of exercise what you put into it."
3. "Your exertion can easily be measured by your
puffing, panting and perspiring."
4. "A Home Gymnasium or special training room
which can be beneficially used by all the family,
by father and mother, by the children, by the old
folks too, for exercise is highly beneficial at any
age."
5. "Your strength, your endurance, and your
recuperative powers will quickly improve if you
follow the rules of health."
6. "Don't neglect your dumbbell training."
7. "Read and study the course at intervals. You
will discover or rediscover some important training
advice you have overlooked or not quite
understood."
8. "Constantly strive to handle more and more
weight."
9. "Progression is the only way to succeed in building
your body."
10. "Set a goal. You must set a goal . . . Don't let
anything prevent your success."
Personally, I think those are all pretty good. I hope
you enjoyed them -- and I hope you enjoy the Dino
interviews on the links I shared!
As always, thanks for reading and have a great day.
If you train today, make it a good one!

Another Podcast for Dinos!
Hail to the Dinosaurs!
I just finished a podcast with Carl Lanore on
the SuperHuman radio Shiow, and it was
pretty darn good. If you missed it on the
live broadcasy, be sure to listen to the
download. It's in the second hour of the
program.
I'll send the link tomorrow.
In the meantime, I've been doing a number
of podcasts, including one with long-time
Dino Bill Kociaba. We did that one last
week, and the link just went up today,
so it's brand new.
Bill is a former gym owner, longtime lifter,
and a guy who is very knowledgeable about
training, bodybuilding, lifting, health and
firness -- and the real deal, behind the
scenes stuff in professional wrestling,
which has always had many curious
links to the Iron Game.
Bill has a nice website and has had some great
podcasts, including one with Clarence Bass and
another with Steve Maxwell.
Here's the link to the one that Bill and I did:
http://kociaba-fitness.com/blog_an_interview_with_brooks_kubik
Bill is just starting to get his website and his
podcast going, so run on over and check it out,
say hello, leave comments and hit the LIKE
button and the SHARE button.
Anyhow, it was a fun interview, and I hope
you enjoy it!
