Bundle Up and Do Squats!

Cold weather training calls for lots of layers. Stay warm out there!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

It's been cold as heck here in Louisville -
and the same is true across much of the
world right now.

And that means it's time to bundle up and
do squats.

Or deadlifts.

Or presses.

Or push-ups and pull-ups.

Or the farmer's walk.

Or go for a nice long walk.

Or whatever.

The important thing is to do something
physical - stay active - keep moving -
and get your blood flowing.

Trudi and I went for a nice walk yesterday.

We wore triple layers on top - and double
socks - and scarves, hats and warm gloves.

It was cold, but the sun was out and it
felt great.

So I decided to set up shop outside and
do some old-fashioned split style snatches
to earn my dinner.

That's the only way I can do overhead
lifting because the basement ceiling is
too low for presses, snatches and clean
and jerks. Not sure who designed the
place, but he obviously wan't a lifter.

Trudi understands. She didn't even try to
talk me out of it.

"Sounds like fun!" she said.

So I re-bundled in double layers of sweats,
and went out and set things up for a nice
little workout.

I miscalculated a bit because the clouds
came out and covered the sun almost
the minute I got started - and then the
wind kicked up - and pretty soon it was
downright chilly.

I would do a lift, and then retreat back
into the garage, blow on my hands, and
then go out and do the next lift.

And as you might imagine, I sure as heck
didn't rest very long between lifts.

I didn't go heavy - that would not have
been wise in cold weather - but I trained -
and I had fun - and that's the important
thing.

Anyhow, wherever you are, bundle up
and get in a good workout. It doesn't
matter what you do - just do it.

It will make all the difference in the world.

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

People Who Train

Old-timer Fred Rollon shows what old-school strength training and a healthy diet can do for a man. Rollon was nicknamed "the Human Anatomy Chart" back in the day.

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

Couple of quick notes, and then let's
talk training.

1. Strength and Health Mags

I'm selling over 400 rare issues of
Bob Hoffman's Strength and Health
magazine.

Strength and Health was a wonderful
old-school magazine - with tons of
great photos of the old time champions.

So here's your chance to get a nice
collection going - at some very low
prices.

Go here for the complete list:

2. Going Strong on Kindle!

We have over 25 books in the
Kindle bookstore, and they're
all very popular - but the new
addition is going stronger than
ever.

It's called 100 Strength Training
Tips for Combat Athletes - and
it's a complete guide to building
the kind of strength and power
you need for any form of combat,
be in martial arts, MMA, wrestling,
judo, jiu jitsu, boxing, football,
rugby, self defense training or
anything else.

You can grab a copy right here:

3. People Who Train

In training news, I was thinking
about people who train - and
about people who don't train.

There's a real difference between
them.

And the difference grows greater
and greater as we grow older.

People who train look younger
than their years.

They look healthy and strong.

They stand tall and straight.

They walk with strong, powerful
strides.

They carry plenty of muscle - they
have strong, thick bones - and they
have endless energy.

There's something about them that
sets them apart from the rest of the
world.

People used to call John Grimek "The
Glow" - in part because of his deep,
dark tan, but in part because he had
some sort of powerful inner energy.

I think that many longtime strength
trainers have a similar sort of energy.
Perhaps not as much as Grimek - after
all, he was the top champ of his era -
but something that clearly sets them
apart from the rest of the world.

If you train, you know what I'm
talking about.

If you don't, you should start -
because then you'll feel and
experience it for yourself.

And then you, too, will know
what I'm talking about.

Bob Hoffman used to call the
weights "Iron Pills."

He said they kept you young.

He was right.

So keep on taking those Iron
Pills - and stay young and
strong for all the years of
your life!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

P.S. Dumbbells are great for home
gym workouts - and great for older

25 Things that Dinos Do!

John Grimek shows his form in the one-hand deadlift. Very few modern trainees have ever seen someone do a one-hand deadlift, let alone tried to do one!

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

One quick note and then we'll talk training.

1. My EBay Store

Since Trudi and I are planning to move to
the Pacific Northwest in the not-too-distant
future, I'm selling al of my duplicate copies
of Iron Game books and magazines.

I'm listing them on eBay now - and here are
the first three listings:

Peary Rader's Iron Man Jan. 1978

The Illustrated History of Physical
Culture

I also have tons of old issues of Strength
and Health magazine from the 40's, 50's
and 60's - shoot me an email if you're

2.  Great Things that Dinos Do!

When it comes to training, most people focus
on "the champions" and what the "champions"
are doing.

I tend to focus on the ordinary folks - people
like you and me who love to train - who stick
to it through thick and thin - and who end up
pretty darn strong and pretty darn impressive.

So I thought I'd make a list of some really
impressive things that Dinos do.

Here it is. See if you can spot yourself on the
list (and note that you may be there more than
once):

1. Lifting and carrying great big stones.

2. Giving a heavy sandbag the ride of its life.

3. Making great gains from your training even if
you only have time for one or two workouts a
week.

4. Doing squats -- and doing them hard and heavy.

5. Any of the advanced workouts in Dinosaur
Bodyweight Training.

6. Heavy dumbbell training -- with the emphasis
on heavy. (See Dinosaur Dumbbell Training
for details.)

7. Finishers.

8. Thick bar training.

9. Heavy partials in the power rack.

10. Keeping at it after age 40.

11. Keeping at it after age 50.

12. Keeping at it after age 60 and beyond.

13. Making a date with a special strength
stone somewhere in Scotland - or in Iceland.

14. Teaching your children how to train.

15. Teaching your grandchildren how to train.

16. Learning to do new stuff -- whatever your
age.

17. Using the same barbell at age 60 that you
used at age 12.

18. Growing as much of your own food as
possible.

19. Entering your first powerlifting, weightlifting
or strongman comp.

20. Saying "no" to roidskies.

21. Dropping 40 pounds and five inches off your
gut because you know it's good for your health --
and staying just as strong at your new bodyweight
as you were when you were heavier.

22. Focusing on lifelong strength and health.

23. Learning about the lives and lifting of the
great old-time champions -- and striving to
match their lifts in your own workouts.

24. Setting a good example for others.

25. Teaching someone else how to train Dino
style.

There are many more. Send in your ideas and
I'll share them with your fellow Dinos.

As always, thanks for reading, and have a
great day. If you train today, make it a good
one!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik

P.S. No. 26 on the list is having a well-read copy
of Dinosaur Training on your bookshelf or in
your gym bag:
