The Value of Simplicity in Strength Training and Muscle Building

The outdoor lifting area at Dinosaur Headquarters. It's not fancy, but it's a great place to train.

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

I'm a great believer in simple workouts
and simple training.

That's because they work - better and
more effectively than anything else out
there.

They're also fun - and despite their
simplicity, they're very interesting.

You can follow simple workouts for
your entire training career, and never
grow tired or bored with them.

But why is that?

Why are simple workouts so effective -
and so much fun - and so interesting?

There are many reasons - but one of
them is this:

Simple workouts let you focus on what
you are doing.

They let you train with the strongest
possible mind-muscle link.

You can go deep inside every rep.

You can train with maximum concentration
and total and complete, laser-like focus.

In Bill Pearl's apt and wonderful term, you
can explore the Inner Universe.

When you use simple exercises and simple
workouts, you don't have to focus on what
to do and how to do it.

Instead, you can focus on what's going
on inside your body on every rep that
you perform.

You always can avoid the all too common
problem of over-thinking things - which
the high-tech and super complex programs
tend to magnify.

In short, keep it simple.

If your training is in the doldrums - if you're
stuck in a rut - and if it feels like you're not
going anywhere, don't look for ways to make
your program more complicated.

Look for ways to make it more simple.

More basic.

More streamlined.

More grounded.

Case in point - last night's workout here
at Dino Headquarters.

It was outside - standing on a 4 x 5 sheet
of heavy rubber mat in the driveway in back
of our duplex - and the equipment consisted
of a single plate-loading dumbbell.

That's right - one dumbbell.

But that was all I needed.

I hit it hard and had a wonderful workout -
and tons of fun - and I was in the zone for
the entire 60 minutes.

My other workouts may involve two plate-
loading dumbbells - or a barbell - or a
Trap Bar - or a barbell and squat stands.

And sometimes I go for broke and use
the barbell AND the dumbbells in one
workout - or maybe even the barbell,
the dumbbells and the squat stands.

But the equipment is always basic and
simple - and so are the exercises - and
so is everything else.

It's streamlined, bare bones and un-
apologetically old-fashioned.

But it's also hard, tough, demanding
and challenging - and tons of fun -
and I wouldn't trade it for the
fanciest gym in the world.

As always, thanks for reading and have
a great day. If you train today, keep it
simple - and make it a good one!

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik
