You'll never guess the names of some of the Grimek family's neighbors way back in a small village in Slovakia. |
Hail to the Dinosaurs!
As you know from earlier emails, I'm
very interested in genealogy, and am
trying to find out as much as I can
about the Kubik family.
My grandfather is from Borcova,
Slovakia, a small village down the
road due south of Martin, Slovakia.
Martin is in the High Tatra Mountains,
close to the border between Poland
and Slovakia.
The Kubik family lived on a big hill,
and ran a lumber operation. They
carted the lumber over the mountains
into Poland, and then far out into the
plains, where they could sell it for a
better price. So I come from a family
of lumberjacks who also happened to
have been good businessmen.
Anyhow, the other day I saw a note
about John Grimek's family, and where
they lived before John's parents came
to the USA.
It's a small village in Slovakia. The
name of the village is Ustie nad
Oravou.
I looked it up, and it's about 40
miles away from Martin - so it's
close to where my family is from.
I did some more searching and
sleuthing, and I found several
small villages close to Oravou.
I also found some of the most
common family names in those
villages.
They included:
Stanko - which is funny, because
Steve Stanko was John Grimek's
best buddy at York. At one time,
Grimek was regarded as the best
developed man in the world, and
Stanko was regarded as the
strongest man in the world.
Stanczyk - which is also funny,
because Stan Stanczyk won five
World Championships in weight-
lifting (in three different weight
classes). He also won a gold
medal at the 1948 Olympics
and a silver medal at the 1952
Olympics.
Kubik - which again is funny,
because I happen to be a big
fan of old-school weightlifting,
and John Grimek, Steve Stanko,
Stan Stanczyk and others of
their era are my heroes.
Is it possible that one small
village - or several small villages
very close to each other - not
only had John Grimek's ancestors,
but the ancestors of Steve Stanko
and Stan Stanczyk, as well - and
that some of my long-lost relatives
lived in the same village and actually
knew them?
I suppose we'll never know - but
think how interesting it would be
if that were true.
And think about this:
If John Grimek, Steve Stanko and
Stan Stanczyk all had ties to that
small village in Slovakia, what in
the heck was in the drinking
water?
Yours in strength,
