The Grand Old Duke of York

Train with a purpose! Every rep, every set and every workout should bring you closer to your chosen goals.

Hail to the Dinosaurs!

Do you remember the nursery rhyme
about the Grand Old Duke of York?

It goes like this:

The Grand Old Duke of York

Oh, the Grand Old Duke of York.

He had 10,000 men.

He marched them up

to the top of the hill,

and marched them down again.

And when they were up,

they were up.

And when they were down,

they were down.

And when they were

only half-way up,

They were neither up

nor down!

In other words, it's a song
about wasted effort - and
about futility - and about
doing things that take a
lot of time and a lot of
work, but never get you
anywhere.

And that sounds like a lot
of training programs.

Lots of wasted effort.

Spending time on things
that don't give you much
if anything in the way of
results.

Literal exercises in
futility.

I saw that for years. Saw it
happen to me - and saw it
happen to many others.

But that's not how strength
training should be - or how
it needs to be.

Each workout should be one
more step on the road to
success.

One more step closer to your
goals.

It's like a hammer and a nail.

Every blow of the hammer
drives the nail deeper into
the wood.

Set your goal - decide how to
get there - break the journey
into a series of steps - and
then work resolutely to
achieve them.

Otherwise, you just spend
your life going up and down
the same old hill.

Yours in strength,

Brooks Kubik
